Spring is in the air!

13 March, 2012

As the weather warms up our focus inevitably turns to diet and food.

One major analysis has just shown that eating too much red meat – and in particular processed and preserved meats such as bacon, salami, hot dogs and other deli meats – raises our risk of dying early from disease like cancer and heart failure.

Preserved meats seem to be particularly bad because of their higher amounts of preservatives, fat and added salt.

The study doesn’t say stop eating meat, just cut back. If you’re wondering how to start, why not enter our competition for Paul McCartney’s Meat Free Monday Cookbook.

It’s a wonderful full colour book (RRP £20) with inspiring all-star recipes to get you loving your veg (which according to one new study can help your complexion glow more than a suntan!). Closing date is March17.

If you’re in the mood for a little treat, our monthly From Farm to Fork series has a great recipe for Lemon Barley Biscuits, using barleyflour rather than wheatflour – a perfect, zesty taste for spring.

The difficulty of treating dementia is rarely out of the news these days. Our Q&A looks at recent claims that coconut oil can help reverse some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Finally, to celebrate the emergence of spring we hope you’ll enjoy reading all about the therapeutic properties of rose essential oil.
