Chiropractic and McTimoney

20 September, 2011

Chiropractic and McTimoney are related therapeutic systems based on the belief that ill health arises from misalignments in the spine and their disruption to surrounding nerves.

Misalignments can be caused by many factors, including accidents, injuries, poor posture, stress and over-exhaustion. Practitioners use their hands to mobilise and gently adjust the joints and muscles of your whole body to help restore normal alignment and functioning.

What conditions is it used for?

Back and neck pain, sciatica, scoliosis, disc herniation, carpal tunnel, hip problems, migraine and headaches are all reasons why people seek chiropractic treatment. Seeing a qualified practitioner gives you the opportunity to discuss your condition with a professional with years of training and experience.

What to expect

After taking a detailed health history, your chiropractor will carry out a careful structural examination, paying particular attention to your spine. They’ll also conduct neurological and orthopaedic tests. Once they’ve arrived at a diagnosis they’ll work out an individual course of treatment best suited to your symptoms. This can include spinal and joint manipulation, soft tissue muscle work and strengthening exercises.

You’ll also be given an exercise programme to follow between sessions. Chiropractic and McTimoney can be particularly effective when combined with herbalism or homoeopathy. Ask your practitioner for their recommendation.
